Dr. Nicole Mikoni

Dr. Nicole Mikoni

Dr. Nicole Mikoni grew up surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Colorado, during which time saving an injured Goldfinch at the age of 8 ignited her flame to aid all creatures feathered, furred, and scaled.

Dr. Mikoni dove headfirst into the field of veterinary medicine and completed her doctorate at the University of California, Davis, graduating in 2017. From there, she furthered her skillset by completing a high-volume emergency internship while simultaneously assisting with wildlife rehabilitation at South Florida Wildlife Center and CROW. Dr. Mikoni was called back home for a couple years to work mixed animal practice seeing both companion and exotic animals in Castle Rock, Colorado, but felt she still had much to learn to truly provide her exotic patients with the specialized and high quality medicine that they need most.

In 2020, Dr. Mikoni returned to UC Davis to complete a post-doctorate research project in avian pain recognition and management before being accepted into the Zoological Companion Animal specialty residency program at the university. Over the course of the next 3 years, Dr. Mikoni received specialty training in emergency medicine, performed a wide variety of surgeries, and became incredibly well-versed in the proper care and treatment of zoological companion animals. She has additionally published multiple articles to aid in further advancing the field of exotic pet care. She will be sitting for her specialty boards in the near future and strives to continue to provide high quality medicine to all of her patients, no matter their species.

Dr. Mikoni is specialty trained in the performance of small mammal dentistry, soft tissue surgery, avian orthopedic surgery, and emergency and critical care medicine, among other skillsets. Rabbits hold a particularly special place in Dr. Mikoni’s heart, but she has yet to meet an exotic species that she didn’t like! When not in the clinic, Dr. Mikoni enjoys beadwork, photography, hiking, paddleboarding, crocheting, reading a good book on a rainy day cuddled up with her 3 cats, and exploring new places with her partner.
